The discipline was created by academician Zhang Zhongjun, who was the pioneering academic leaders of the automatic control. After the reform and opening up of China, automation department has been qualified to confer master and doctor degree and to establish one of the first postdoctoral research centers. Moreover, the two sub-disciplines, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems were assessed as National Key Disciplines in 1987 and 2001 respectively. In 1998, The discipline of DA has been one of first disciplines qualified to confer doctor degree and ranked the 4th among the 29 university disciplines in the evaluation in 2002, and the 3rd among the 51 university disciplines in the evaluation in 2006. In 2007, automation has been assessed as National Key Discipline by the Ministry of Education of China. In 2003, the sub-discipline, namely Aerospace Information and Control began to admit students. In 2005, the postdoctoral research center on Control Science and Engineering was named as one of national outstanding postdoctoral research centers.
In its long-term development, the DA has been committed to leading the academic exploration and promoting national technological research and development. Included in 211 and 985 higher education projects of China, the DA has pictured its future blueprint focusing on the establishment of Ministry of Education Key Laboratory on System Control and Information and Shanghai Optimization and Control Software Engineering Research Center. The main research field of DA deals with a complex system control theory (complex network and chaos control, predictive control and rolling optimization , fuzzy control , process control and analytical design), industrial process control and optimization ( process control technology and software , field bus and network control system integration), autonomous systems and network engineering (autonomous system design and control , wireless sensor networks and application of key technologies), intelligent robotics and manufacturing automation (robot vision, service and humanoid robots, manufacturing system scheduling and supply chain optimization), aerospace information processing and control (target identification and tracking, multi-source information fusion and unmanned airship point control), feature recognition and medical image processing (image understanding and pattern recognition, feature recognition system based on diagnosis, computer-aided surgery), spatial information technology and intelligent transportation (urban spatial information platform, traffic information detection and processing, remote sensing image processing), advanced detection technology and automation devices (alpha spectrometer control system, vehicle dynamic recognition access control systems, intelligent directions batching control systems).
These fields cover various avant-garde academic and technological areas and serve in basic research, high-tech research and development and national economy. As the study fields involve control, information processing, communication, testing and other disciplines widely used in industry, agriculture, transportation, society, geography and medicine, the devolvement of this discipline plays an important role in national economy and social progress.
The department of automation has always attached importance to the faculty development. In the early 1990s, the high quality faculty members were constituted of young, and middle-aged and elderly staff earning a high reputation at home and abroad. In the late 1990s, a number of excellent young academic talents at home and abroad have began their career at DA and now become the leaders of their own fields, which has largely contributed to the diversity of the academic styles of DA. In recent years, the academic level and international reputation of DA has been enhanced due to the join of international famous scholars, such as Professor Cao Xiren and Professor Lindquist. Currently, there are 70 faculty members at DA. 23 teachers have been funded by shanghai and national talent programs, including 2 National Thousand Talents Award winners, 2 National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Engineering Talent Awards, 4 Changjiang Scholars, 5 National Outstanding Youth Fund winner(including 1overseas), 8 New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education (MOE) winners, 3 Shanghai outstanding academic leaders,6 Shanghai Shu Guang academic leaders, 3 Shanghai Venus program winners, 4 Shanghai Pujiang River talents, 1 Shanghai Cheng Guang program winner and 3 outstanding young university teachers of Shanghai. This academic team at DA, featuring international academic perspective and good reputation, has contributed to the development of this discipline to a large extent.
Since 1980s, the research and development of automation, characterized by its cutting-edge, wide coverage and strong basic research, has been aiming at the frontier development of the international academic research and played a leading role in domestic research, especially in national basic research program and in academic papers. This discipline has kept its academic advantage in various ways.
From 2007 to 2011, DA has undertaken 973 national programs, 16 programs from “863” programs, 91 National Natural Science Foundation programs, including 8 key programs, 2 outstanding youth programs, 1 special instrument program, 66 enterprise programs; DA has published 577 SCI papers, among which 12 papers belong to ESI highly cited papers; DA has obtained one first prize of Shanghai Natural Science, one Shanghai Peony Natural Science Award and one Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award; from 2007 to 2011, the SCI papers were cited more than 4000 times, including the citation in Nature, Cell and PNAS and other top journals; based on its rich scientific results and strength, DA built the Ministry of Education Key Lab of System control and Information Processing, named as the innovation team by Ministry of Education in 2008 and won the innovation group funding by National Fund Committee in 2012.
In order to nurture the talents with world vision for future, in recent years, the discipline has further its educational reform and internationalization and attached great importance to students' innovative ability. In recent 5 years, DA has won 9 teaching awards, 1 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation and 1 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation nomination, 10 Shanghai outstanding doctoral dissertations, 2 Shanghai outstanding theses for master degree. The graduate students have won 3 Grand Prizes and 17 first prizes in China Robot Competition and National Students Intelligent Car Competition.
The department of automation takes an active part in domestic and oversea academic activities, which contributes to the shape of open and international academic environment. In 2000, the 3rd ASCC, a grand international academic conference, was firstly held by the department of automation. From 2009 to 2011, DA organized or co-organized 3 international conferences, including IEEE CDC-CCC 2009 and IEEE ICRA 2011, received 154 overseas scholars and made 105 academic reports. Faculty members joined the oversea cooperation and exchanges more than 147 times and opened online graduate courses with 15 prestigious universities from 4 continents. In recent years, Professor Cao Xiren and Lindquist, internationally famous masters, have opened series of lectures for both teachers and graduate students. At present, 20 teachers work as chief editors of 2 international magazines and of 38 international academic journals. International Journal of System Control and Information Processing has also been founded.
